Loose Clothing

05 Dec

As a lesson learned from one of the companies in our self-insured group; a carpenter was cutting plywood with a circular saw on the side of a road way project.  A semi-truck sped by causing his safety vest to flap in the wind.  Because the employee had not zipped his safety vest, it was loose and the wind caused the vest to get caught in the saw.  The saw started to work its way up the vest, so he pushed down and the saw cut his thigh severely.  I have spoken to most employees about the dangers of strings handing from hoodies; according to an OSHA report, a hoodie string got caught in a saw which resulted in a fatality.  Please avoid loose clothing that can get caught in power tools.  You may have heard of the phrase “Dress for Success”, but in terms of personal protection “Dress for Safety”.
