Overhead Loads

24 Oct

On many project jobsites there are mechanical means to lift loads to the working area, which is very helpful since it saves times and avoids injury from manually lifting or carrying loads. But just because it’s helpful doesn’t mean it can’t be hazardous.  IF IT’S IN THE AIR IT’S DANGEROUS.  Even the smallest object can be deadly if dropped from a tall enough height.  So remember to always be aware of your surroundings not only around you at eye level but above as well.
* Always be sure loads are carried as close to the ground as needed
* Use tag lines on loads whenever possible
* Use only one signal person to avoid confusion
* Be sure the signal person can clearly observe the load and operator at all times
* Never hoist over other workers and keep the hoist area clear
* Be sure loads are properly rigged before being lifted
* Always inspect hoisting and rigging equipment for proper use
* Hoisting speed should never proceed too fast, so as to not lose control of the load
* Monitor weather conditions especially on windy days.
