Heat Stress / Heat Stroke

Approximately 500 people die from heat-related illnesses every year. When the body is unable to cool itself by sweating, several heat-induced illness such as heat stress or heat stroke can occur. High temperature and humidity; direct sun or heat; limited air movement; physical exertion; poor physical condition; some medicines; and inadequate tolerance for hot workplaces are all factors leading to heat stroke.  If this may happen you should call 911 right away.  While you are waiting for help to arrive, move the worker to a cool, shaded area.  Loosen or remove heavy clothing, provide cool drinking water, and fan and mist the person with water.

Tips to remember to help prevent heat-related illnesses:
” Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing such as cotton
” Gradually build up your workload to the heavy work
” Schedule the heavy work during the coolest part of the day
” Remember to take breaks when it’s hot and humid
” Drink water as frequently as every 15-20 minutes, it should be enough so that you’re never thirsty
” Avoid alcohol and drinks with large amounts of caffeine or sugar.
